Brown Friday: The Plumbing Rush That Hits While Shops Are Closed
Roto-Rooter calls the day after Thanksgiving the busiest plumbing day of the year, and it falls on a Friday many shops take off. How to staff, price and triage it.
TL;DR: Friday, November 27, 2026, is Brown Friday, and Roto-Rooter says it is the busiest plumbing day of the year, with calls 50 percent above an average Friday. Decide in October whether you will be open, then set your staffing, rate, triage order, and voicemail before Thanksgiving night.
Brown Friday brings more calls while many shops are closed
Thanksgiving 2026 falls on Thursday, November 26. The next day is Friday, November 27, the day plumbers and the trade press call Brown Friday.
Roto-Rooter says Brown Friday is its busiest day of the year. Its incoming service calls jump 50 percent above an average Friday. The company also says the four-day Thanksgiving weekend, Thursday through Sunday, averages a 21 percent increase in calls over any other Thursday-through-Sunday period in the year. Roto-Rooter published those figures here.
That rush lands on a holiday Friday when many independent shops are closed or running a skeleton crew. Demand goes up while the number of shops answering goes down. The shops that answer get the work.
Roto-Rooter ranks the common calls in this order: kitchen sink clogs and jammed garbage disposals, main sewer clogs, then toilet clogs. The company blames grease and hot turkey drippings, starches such as rice and pasta, and poultry skin and bones. Roto-Rooter spokesperson Paul Abrams called Thanksgiving “a perfect storm for plumbing emergencies. With homes full of guests, extra showers, and marathon kitchen sessions, pipes and disposals are pushed to their limits.”
On the morning after a big holiday meal, the first calls tend to arrive in a tight cluster before 9 a.m., and almost all of them open with the kitchen sink. Callers describe it the same way: the disposal “hums but won’t spin,” or water “comes up on the other side” of a double sink. The sewer calls come later in the day, after the second round of showers and the first loads of laundry.
Decide your November 27 schedule in October
Both answers are fine. Open the shop, or close it. Make the decision in October, not when the first call arrives Thursday night.
If you are closed, put that fact in your greeting and voicemail. State the first day you will be back.
If you are open, set the hours and name the person on call. Decide whether that person handles only scheduled work or also takes emergency calls after hours. The advice in this after-hours calls article applies here.
One stocked van can cover kitchen calls
One on-call tech with a stocked van can handle a run of kitchen sink calls. A second tech makes sense if you also want to chase main-line work.
Make sure the on-call van carries:
- A sink machine or hand auger
- A disposal wrench
- A spare disposal, if you stock them
- A closet auger
- Fittings for P-trap replacement
Kitchen sink and disposal clogs are usually short jobs. Batch them by neighborhood and fit several into one tech’s day. A toilet clog with guests in the house is urgent to the caller, but often a quick job.
A main sewer clog with sewage backing up inside the house is different. That is the true emergency and the biggest ticket. It goes first. Use the questions in the sewer backup call guide when the phone rings.
Set the holiday rate before the first call
Choose the holiday or after-hours rate before November 27. Whoever answers must state it before booking.
A caller who hears the rate up front books or declines. A caller who finds it on the invoice writes a bad review. Put the charge and the wording in the call instructions. Review your policy with this trip-fee article.
The same rule applies to Thursday night. Most Thanksgiving-evening callers can take the first Friday appointment instead of sending a truck at 9 p.m. Make the exception for sewage in the house or no working toilet.
Triage the calls in a fixed order
Do not let the loudest caller set the order. Use this list:
- Sewage inside the house or every drain backing up. Treat it as a main-line call.
- A kitchen sink that will not drain in a house full of guests.
- A single slow drain or a disposal that hums but can wait until Monday.
Leave Friday as open same-day blocks. Do not pre-book every hour. Batch sink calls by neighborhood, then keep one afternoon gap for the main-line call that comes in at noon. Several calls can land together. Use the intake approach in the three-calls-at-once article rather than promising every caller an immediate truck.
Use the rush to earn the next call
The Brown Friday kitchen sink customer is a first-time customer for many shops. Ask about the second issue while the tech is there. A slow bathroom drain, another disposal problem, or a drain that has been acting up gives you a reason to discuss the next visit.
Follow up after the job. Offer the right next service, not a vague sales pitch. The drain cleaning article covers that choice. You can also use the approach in the holiday weekends article when planning the next holiday schedule.
Phone coverage matters when the calls arrive together. Bella is Plumber Secretary’s phone assistant. She answers every call 24/7, including Thanksgiving night and Brown Friday, sorts true emergencies from calls that can wait, sends you an instant alert on the urgent ones, books the rest into open slots through calendar sync, and sends a call summary by text or email after each call.
Pricing (per month): Starter $95 handles one call at a time and includes 24/7 answering, emergency triage with instant alerts, job booking with calendar sync, call summaries, and basic customer memory. Growth $295 handles three calls at a time and adds full long-term customer memory, two-way texting, appointment reminders, quote follow-ups, and review requests after jobs. Pro $495 handles unlimited simultaneous calls and adds custom call scripts, which is how a shop has Bella state its holiday rate the same way on every call.
Call Plumber Secretary at (707) 620-5284. Bella answers the demo line at (669) 284-5564.
This week, decide whether you will open Friday, November 27, then write the voicemail, set the rate, assign the tech, and block the schedule before Thanksgiving night.
